Hussein Chalayan
21 January – 17 May 2009
London’s Design Museum finally pins together the work of the experimental fashion designer Chalayan in one exhibition, covering some 15 years of the twice-named British designer of the year. Look out for old favourites, such as the remote control dress, Before Minus Now, and Afterworlds, a seamless collection of furniture that ingeniously transforms into a collection of clothes. Also on display are newer items like Readings, a dramatic dress composed of more than 200 moving lasers.

imm cologne
19-25 January
This is where a lot of the wheeler-dealing happens, with buyers swooping through the 11 halls snapping up the things they saw as prototypes at Milan the year before. Last year the fair’s renowned ideal house installations were scrapped, but the young designer showcase d3 has been consistently well curated, and the Passagen fringe events always have a smattering of exhibitions that make the cross-city winter trawl worth the effort.
